Southease Chilli Day, has gone from.....
This...........
To This.......
In just four years!
Originally conceived by village resident Adrian Orchard, seen in the top photograph, Southease Chilli Day has gone from Adrian selling chillies and chilli plants on the village green to passing visitors, to an event which now involves most of the community and which saw some 500 visitors attend the 2009 event.
The organisers believe the event to be unique as it has as its guiding principle the fact that anything sold at the event which contains chillies, can only contain Southease grown chillies. This has the added benefit of preventing the event from becoming so big, it swamps the community. The profits from the event go back into the community.
In recent years, the range of chilli products on sale has increased dramatically to now include, chilli jam, chilli relish, pickled chillies, chilli chocolate, chilli sorbet and chilli powder, as well as still having chilli plants and fresh chillies available. In addition, hot chilli con carne, in a range of strengths to suit most palettes, including vegetarian palettes, Padron Tapas, described as “Chilli Russian Roulette” as 1 in 5 is hot, and a bar, have all been introduced in recent years
Planning for the 2010 event may still be at an early stage however the date of 18th September has now been confirmed. This year will see the introduction of the “Bhut Jalokia” chilli which currently holds the Guinness Book of Records title for the hottest chilli in the world with a Scoville Heat Rating (SHU) of 1,001,304. One to watch out for!
