Southease Village - East Sussex - England war grave
The church yard of St. Peter's, Southease is the final resting place of a world war two Hurricane pilot. The grave
is that of sergeant (pilot) Arthur James Vaughan RAFVR, service no. 916680 of 242 squadron RAF.
His mark 1 Hurricane, z2666 ran out of fuel and crashed in a forced landing between Chartham and Chicham at 13.20 hours
on the 26th April 1941. Sgt Vaughan was taken to Chartham Military Hospital where he sadly succumbed to his injuries
at 17.45 the same evening. He was 41 when he died.
We know very little about Sgt. Vaughan, other than the information above, we know only that he had a wife called Christine.
Southease is a very small community and if you did not know we were here you would drive past us. To date, we do not know
why Sgt. Vaughan is buried at Southease as we have been unable to establish any link that he may have had with the village.
Searches of UK BDM indexes and census records have so far failed to yield up any information which would help us to
understand his presence in Southease.
